This post took a while to write, since I've been busy getting my bearings in Seattle. This is the only location that I didn't do for a full month and instead opted for 2 weeks. It just happened that way based on how I scheduled my time in destination #4. Since I didn't have much time in Seattle, this will be my only post about the city encompassing everything I did. I had a few days of rain, but also got some really wonderful weather, so no complaints.
Livability for me: 50% - I ended up really liking Seattle and could see myself visiting it again (maybe living there), although I'd prefer coming in the summer. Also, while I liked the area I stayed (Belltown), I'd probably stay in the Capital Hill area which has a more Brooklyn vibe.
Highlights:
- The Space Needle - A total touristy thing to do, but I have to say I became infatuated immediately with Seattle after going up. The views were completely beautiful and the city has so many high rises and a really pretty skyline.
- Chihuly Garden and Glass - A museum right near the Space Needle showcasing the studio glass of Dale Chihuly, such an amazing place. It was incredible to see what he thought to do with glass and be able to get into the imagination of the artist.
- Pike Place Market - This completely reminded me of Haymarket and Quincy Market in Boston and the little markets in India - so many good restaurants around, especially the seafood. The first Starbucks is also in the area. I walked by it but didn't bother going in as the line was always really long. While at Pikes Place, visit Beecher's Handmade Cheese, you can watch cheese being made through the window. The mac and cheese is pretty famous here, so get some to go, sit by the waterfront and enjoy. I recommend it if you really like cheese. Plus the gum wall is around the area too - while super super gross, it was definitely something to see and had a bit of an "artsy" vibe.
- Optimism Brewing Company - Great place to get a beer. The place has a very cool vibe, you can bring any food in (they also get food trucks) and dogs are allowed in the open space. They had a lot of great beers, I loved all of them in my flight.
- Gasworks Park - Former gas company site, now a park with great views of downtown. I loved walking around here, plus you have this small hill called Kite Hill in the park. Apparently in the summer you see lots of people flying kites. I only saw 2 people attempting to parasail along the water, but very cool to see them flying in front of the Seattle skyline. I captured it a bit on my Instagram: asuitcaseandgo.
- Other things that aren't mentioned above but definitely added to the Seattle experience: Fremont Troll, MoPop Museum, seeing the Space Needle at night, riding the Seattle Great Wheel, coffee basically anywhere but my fave was the Cardamom Rose Latte from Caffe Vita in Capital Hill, riding the monorail, Kerry Park with the most incredible views of Seattle and walking around Olympic Sculpture Park.
